British luxury automaker Bentley Motors has unveiled its first fully electric vehicle, the Torcal, marking a major step in the company's shift toward electric mobility.
The new electric SUV is also expected to become Bentley’s cheapest model, with a UK starting price of around £173,300 (about €202,000). That puts it below the starting prices of Bentley's existing Bentayga, Flying Spur and Continental GT ranges.
Bentley Enters the EV Market
The Torcal is Bentley's fourth model line and has been designed, engineered and built at the company's factory in Crewe, England.
Bentley says the SUV can deliver up to 600 kilometres of range under the WLTP testing standard. The more powerful Torcal S can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds, putting the electric SUV firmly in the performance-luxury segment.
Designed to Attract New Buyers
Bentley is positioning the Torcal as an entry point to the brand, with the company hoping to attract younger customers and buyers who have not previously owned a Bentley.
The SUV sits below the Bentayga in the lineup and uses a more compact design while retaining Bentley's focus on luxury materials and technology. The company has also developed a synthetic driving soundtrack using recordings of drums, viola and bass to provide a sound experience inspired by its traditional combustion engines.
Major Investment in the Crewe Factory
The launch is backed by a £350 million investment in Bentley's Crewe facility, equivalent to roughly €408 million.
The investment includes a new production line for the Torcal and wider upgrades to the factory. Bentley says the programme supports around 4,000 existing jobs at the site.
Bentley Takes a Cautious EV Approach
Bentley's move into electric cars comes as the luxury industry remains divided over how quickly wealthy customers are embracing EVs.
The company had previously targeted a fully electric lineup by 2030, but that timeline has been pushed back to 2035, with Bentley indicating even that target could change depending on market demand.
CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser has acknowledged that the company is still testing how strongly customers will respond to an electric Bentley.
A New Test for Luxury EV Demand
The Torcal arrives as several luxury manufacturers rethink their electric strategies because demand has not grown as quickly as expected.
Bentley is taking a different approach by combining its familiar luxury design with a lower entry price and electric power. The company has not announced plans for a second EV yet, making the Torcal an important test of whether Bentley customers are ready to make the switch.
With a 600-km range, high-performance variants and a starting price below Bentley's other model lines, the Torcal gives the brand a new way to enter the EV market while potentially becoming its most accessible model.
