Google has reorganized its artificial intelligence leadership as it looks to strengthen Gemini and compete more aggressively with rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
As part of the restructuring, Google DeepMind chief Demis Hassabis moved into the role of chair, while his deputy Koray Kavukcuoglu took greater control of the division and the development of Gemini. The changes also include the movement of some teams from DeepMind into Google’s wider corporate structure.
The leadership overhaul comes at a critical time for Google, with competition in generative AI accelerating rapidly. The company is under increasing pressure to improve Gemini’s performance, release new models faster and integrate its AI technology more deeply across products such as Search, Workspace, Cloud and other services.
Sergey Brin Steps Up AI Involvement
Google co-founder Sergey Brin has reportedly become more involved in the company’s AI efforts in recent months. He has encouraged teams to accelerate development and focus resources on areas where Gemini still needs improvement, including coding capabilities and advanced model performance.
Brin’s increased involvement reflects the importance Google is placing on maintaining its position at the forefront of artificial intelligence.
The restructuring follows reports that internal testing showed Google’s upcoming flagship Gemini model lagging behind some competitors in key areas, contributing to delays in its planned release.
Kavukcuoglu Takes a Bigger Role
Kavukcuoglu, who also serves as Google’s chief AI architect, is expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping the company’s overall AI strategy.
His responsibilities include overseeing Gemini’s development while helping integrate the technology across Google’s products and commercial operations. The move is also expected to bring DeepMind’s research efforts closer to Google’s broader business priorities.
Some employees and in-ustry observers have raised concerns that DeepMind could lose part of the independence that traditionally allowed it to focus on long-term AI research.
However, Google continues to invest heavily in infrastructure, computing resources and model development as it attempts to keep pace with rapid advances from competing AI companies.
With Gemini becoming central to Google’s future products and services, the latest leadership changes highlight how seriously the company is taking the global AI race. The coming months are likely to be crucial as Google works to improve Gemini’s capabilities, accelerate innovation and strengthen its competitive position in the fast-growing artificial intelligence market.
