OpenAI, the company behind the widely used artificial intelligence platform ChatGPT, has announced plans to open a new office in Madrid later this year as part of its broader European expansion strategy.

The new office is expected to strengthen OpenAI's collaboration with Spanish businesses, developers, research institutions, and public-sector organizations while supporting the growing adoption of artificial intelligence technologies across the country.

The expansion comes amid rising demand for OpenAI's products in Spain. According to local reports, ChatGPT's weekly active users in the country have increased by more than 40% year-over-year, placing Spain among OpenAI's top five European markets.

OpenAI said Spain has emerged as one of Europe's most dynamic technology and artificial intelligence ecosystems, driven by increasing investment in digital innovation and a growing number of organizations integrating AI tools into their operations.

The Madrid office will serve as a regional hub, enabling the company to work more closely with local stakeholders and support the development of AI-powered solutions across multiple sectors.

The move aligns with OpenAI's ongoing efforts to expand its footprint across Europe. The company already maintains offices in major European cities, including London, Paris, Brussels, and Munich, as it seeks to strengthen its presence in key international markets.

Founded in 2015, OpenAI has become one of the world's leading artificial intelligence companies following the global success of ChatGPT and its suite of AI models. The company has accelerated its international expansion in recent years as demand for generative AI technologies continues to grow among businesses, governments, and consumers.

The Madrid office is expected to become operational before the end of 2026, further reinforcing OpenAI's commitment to supporting AI innovation and digital transformation across Europe.
