Giorgia Meloni Says She Expected Relations With Trump to Be Easier

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has acknowledged that her relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump has proved more difficult than she initially expected, despite areas of political agreement between the two leaders.

Speaking in an interview with The New York Times, Meloni said she had anticipated smoother relations with Trump because of their shared positions on issues including immigration and cultural politics. However, she indicated that relations between Rome and Washington have developed differently than expected. Euronews reported the remarks on August 21.

Tensions between the two leaders became particularly visible in July when Trump posted an image featuring Meloni on Truth Social alongside a remark referring to a restraining order. The episode followed an earlier public dispute between the two leaders and added to signs of strain in U.S.-Italy relations.

Meloni also indicated that she and Trump had not been in contact for several weeks. Asked about the possibility of meeting him after the summer, she stopped short of confirming plans but stressed the importance of maintaining Western unity.

The Italian leader said national strategy should not depend on personal relationships between political figures. She also rejected the idea of Italy adopting a subordinate position internationally, emphasizing her ambition to strengthen national confidence and political independence.

Her comments mark a notable shift in perceptions of what had once appeared to be a potentially close political relationship, highlighting how policy differences and diplomatic tensions can complicate alliances even between leaders with some ideological similarities.
