Lionel Messi once again demonstrated why he remains one of football's most iconic figures, scoring a stunning hat-trick as Argentina defeated Algeria 3-0 in their opening FIFA World Cup match and equaled Miroslav Klose's all-time World Cup scoring record.

The Argentine captain delivered a masterclass performance before a packed crowd at Arrowhead Stadium, taking his World Cup goal tally to 16 and moving level with German legend Miroslav Klose atop the tournament's all-time scoring charts. The achievement came exactly two decades after Messi made his World Cup debut for Argentina, further adding to the significance of the occasion.

Historic Night for Messi

Argentina wasted little time asserting control over the match. Messi opened the scoring in the early stages after connecting with a precise pass from Inter Miami teammate Rodrigo De Paul. The goal immediately energized the thousands of Argentina supporters who had filled the stadium to witness another chapter in the legendary forward's remarkable career.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner doubled Argentina's advantage shortly after halftime, showcasing his trademark composure and finishing ability. He completed his hat-trick late in the match before receiving a standing ovation as he left the field, with fans celebrating one of the most memorable individual performances of the tournament so far.

The hat-trick was the 61st of Messi's professional career and his 11th for the Argentine national team. It also extended his scoring streak to five consecutive World Cup matches, underlining his continued influence despite approaching his 39th birthday next week.

Record Within Reach

Messi's latest achievement places him alongside Klose at the top of the World Cup scoring list and positions him to become the tournament's outright leading scorer in the coming weeks. The Argentine star has now scored in five different editions of the World Cup, becoming only the second player in history to accomplish the feat.

The match also marked Messi's 200th international appearance for Argentina, another milestone in a career filled with records and accomplishments. Only Cristiano Ronaldo and Kuwait's Bader Al-Mutawa have made more appearances at the international level.

Argentina Sends Early Statement

Beyond Messi's individual brilliance, Argentina's overall performance highlighted why the reigning champions are once again considered among the favorites to lift the trophy. The team controlled possession, created numerous scoring opportunities, and rarely allowed Algeria to threaten their defense.

Head coach Lionel Scaloni's side appeared confident and organized throughout the contest, combining defensive discipline with attacking creativity. The result gives Argentina an ideal start to the tournament and strengthens belief that another deep World Cup run could be on the horizon.

World Cup Action Continues

Elsewhere on Tuesday, France opened their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Senegal. Kylian Mbappé scored twice to move up the World Cup scoring charts and reinforce France's status as one of the tournament favorites. Norway also made a strong start, defeating Iraq 4-1 behind a brace from Erling Haaland.

As the competition gathers momentum, the spotlight remains firmly on Messi. With the World Cup scoring record now within his grasp, the Argentine captain has once again positioned himself at the center of football's biggest stage. For Argentina and their supporters, the dream of another World Cup triumph remains very much alive.
